Every
piece of writing has an audience and a purpose.
All Star Essays will help you craft a personal statement that
connects with your audience and moves you toward your admissions
goal.
The audience for your essay is the admissions committee
of the college to which you are applying.
The purpose of your essay is
1) To help
readers distinguish you from scores of applicants with similar
profiles.
2) To persuade readers that you are someone they would enjoy having as
a student for the next four years.
At first glance, the admissions committee knows if you are a
competitive applicant. GPA and standardized test scores reflect
your demonstrated academic abilities. Your transcripts and list of activities tell
them what you've accomplished. Your essay is an opportunity to
reveal the person behind your accomplishments.
Think of your essay as an introduction on paper:
"Hi, this is
who I am as a person!" It will give your readers a good idea of
why you want to attend their school – and why they should
welcome you as a student. The ideal essay expresses your
personality, so that when the admissions committee meets you in
person, they will have no trouble matching you up with your
essay.
Your essay is also a chance to illustrate your intelligence and
writing aptitude. It will reassure professors that they won't
have to spend hours correcting basic errors in your coursework.
It might even persuade them that they will look forward to
reading your papers
More importantly, your essay has the potential to set you apart
from other applicants. Unless you have an accomplishment or
attribute that truly makes you unique ("Ah, yes, she's the one
who went up Mount Everest on a unicycle"), the essay is your
best shot at getting committee members' attention and leaving an
impression. It's a sad fact that competitive colleges have more
qualified applicants than they can accommodate. They have to say
no to most applicants, including those who are well-qualified.
You can greatly increase your chances of hearing, "yes" by
writing an essay that makes the school want you.
