Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College is the smallest Ivy League school. It's located in Hanover, New Hampshire, near the Vermont border. Its small size, remote location, and the physical proximity of its various programs give it an intimate atmosphere. These factors also combine to help foster a lot of cross-disciplinary and groundbreaking work. Its location near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory might suggest what its winters are like.
Founded as an undergraduate school, Dartmouth continues to emphasize its undergrad programs. However, it also has excellent research programs, as well as highly esteemed schools of business, engineering, and medicine. It also offers graduate programs in arts and sciences. Its self-proclaimed goal is to instill a love of learning and discovery in its students.
Dartmouth assesses applicants on a need-blind basis, meaning it considers only their abilities, rather than their financial situations, when deciding which students to accept. The goal is to make its educational programs accessible to everyone qualified regardless of financial need.
Dartmouth divides its academic calendar into four terms of equal length. This gives its students enormous flexibility in organizing their schedules. It allows them to arrange internships, research projects, and other off-campus activities any time of year. It also contributes to a large percentage of students studying abroad. About 60 percent of each senior class has spent at least one quarter abroad, more than at any other Ivy League school.
Dartmouth also offers its students extensive extracurricular opportunities. It has more than 200 student organizations and activities, as well as one of the best varsity sports programs in the country. Students can participate in everything from choirs and glee clubs to museum and performing arts activities to mountaineering. The school makes a point of ensuring that its small size and remote location don't keep its students from getting the best possible personal and educational experiences.
