Harvard University
Harvard is the country's oldest university, founded in 1636 – which also makes it the oldest U.S. corporation. And over the past nearly four centuries, it has educated some of the world's most noted people, including seven U.S. presidents. It also boasts 40 Nobel laureates among its current and former faculty. Harvard is more than just a university. It's an enduring American tradition.
Harvard was founded as a small institution with the purpose of educating Protestant clergy. It's more similar to the British model of university education than probably any other school in the country, but it still has a distinctly American flavor. As the U.S. grew in size and purpose, so did Harvard, expanding its educational programs and diversifying its student body and faculty.
Students attending Harvard enjoy the urban life of Boston, Massachusetts, with the campus housed just across the Charles River in Cambridge. The city setting combines colonial-era architecture and landmarks with its growing, modern, hi-tech industry. It's a fusion of past and present, history and future.
Harvard is a big school, with almost two-thirds of its nearly 20,000 students attending its high-profile and prestigious graduate and professional programs. These schools include the world-famous Medical School, the Business School, the Law School, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Divinity School, the School of Public Health, and the Graduate School of Education.
Despite Harvard's size, the University still offers a community environment, with a low student-to-faculty ratio and many opportunities to participate in local community activities. Harvard has a huge and enduring alumni network, with more than 270,000 students passing through its classrooms since it was founded, and these connections can yield a lifetime of career benefits.
