The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)

Administered by: The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). Tests are held at Thomson Prometric Test Centers.

Registration:

Online: Registration begins approximately 6 months before the test date. To register, go to:
http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/registration.htm.

The AAMC advises students to take the MCAT about 18 months prior to the date they wish to enter medical school.

Note that MCAT seating is limited. Test registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Late registrants may not be able to take the test on their preferred date or at their preferred test site.

You may take the MCAT up to 3 times in one year. However, the AAMC discourages students from re-taking the MCAT unless there is a specific reason why their first score might not accurately reflect their abilities (i.e., being ill the day of the test, not understanding the test instructions, etc.)

Format: Beginning in Janaury 2007, The MCAT will be given in the computer-based format only. For an AAMC FAQ on the changeover to computer-based MCAT testing, click here.

Test dates:

The computer-based test is given at Thomson Prometric Test Centers in the U.S. and other countries approximately 22 times each year. Tests can be taken on either weekdays or Saturdays, and in the morning or afternoon. Click here to learn more about dates and locations.

Fee: $210 in the U.S.
$270 outside the U.S.

Length:

Approximately 5 and 1/2 hours, including breaks

Scoring:

Score reports are mailed approximately 30 days after the test.

The MCAT consists of 4 sections: Physical Sciences (PS), Verbal Reasoning (VR), Biological Sciences (BS), and Writing (WS). You receive a separate score for each section. The PS, VR, and BS sections are scored on a scale from 1 to 15. The WS is scored on a scale of J (low) to T (high).

For 2006 medical school matriculants, mean average MCAT scores were:

MCAT VR – 9.8
MCAT PS – 10.1
MCAT BS – 10.5
MCAT WS – P
