The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

The SAT is one of two widely used standardized tests for US college admissions: the ACT (American College Test) is the other.

Some schools prefer one test over the other; some will accept scores from either test; and some schools do not require standardized test scores at all. Check the application requirements for the schools you are applying to.

Nearly 2 million students take either the SAT I (the SAT Reasoning Test) or SAT II (subject) tests each year.

ADMINISTERED BY: The College Board

REGISTRATION:

Online: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/reg.html

By mail: Request a SAT Registration Booklet from your school counselor. The booklet includes a test registration form and return envelope.

The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly known as the SAT I)

TEST DATES: The SAT I is administered 7 times per year in the US and Puerto Rico and 6 times per year elsewhere. For a calendar of test dates, go to the College Board Calendar & Fees page.

You can take the SAT as many times as you wish. Your score report will show your most recent test score plus up to 6 additional SAT Reasoning Test scores and 6 additional SAT Subject Test scores.

FEE: $41.50

LENGTH: 3 hours and 45 minutes

SCORING:

Scores are available by phone and on the Web approximately 2 weeks after the test date. Scores are mailed 3 to 4 weeks after the test date. Scores are available by phone for an additional fee. Rush reports, which are sent 2 business days following receipt of your request, are also available for an additional fee.

The SAT has three scores, each on the scale of 200 to 800. Your score report will include writing (W 200-800), mathematics (M 200-800), and critical reading (CR 200-800). A perfect total score is 2400.
